A special invitation

Dear colleague,

In the past decade, failures to follow safe injection practices (e.g., misuse of syringes, needles and vials) in a variety of U.S. healthcare settings resulted in more than 30 outbreaks of infectious diseases, including hepatitis C, and notification of more than 125,000 patients. Recently published research from Premier identified that a small but disturbing percentage of the 5,500 clinicians surveyed were not following recommended practices for safe use of syringes and medication vials for parenteral injections.

The Premier healthcare alliance and the Safe Injection Practices Coalition are collaborating to host an open meeting,
Safer Designs for Safer Injections: Innovations in Process, Products and Practices on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, DC.

Our goal is to bring stakeholders together to raise awareness and continue the national dialogue on expanding safer, innovative approaches and product designs to protect patients and prevent infections related to injection practices.

Who should attend

We would like to invite you or a representative from your organization to participate in the meeting and dialogue. We are inviting healthcare providers, clinicians, suppliers, manufacturers, professional groups, governmental agencies, researchers, human factors and design engineers, and others interested in safer injections.

Agenda
Morning:
Participants will hear from the CDC, CMS, FDA and other federal partners and stakeholders addressing evidence about risks and current activities, followed by
a moderated large group discussion.

Afternoon:
Participants will be invited to join a breakout session intended to stimulate discussions on barriers and challenges to safer injections, current and future innovations, and designs and solutions for parenteral/IV injections without patient infections. Breakout session dialogue will be shared with the full group in a moderated discussion. When you arrive at the meeting you will be asked to sign up for one of the following topics:

  • Process innovations: Purchasing, distribution, cost, reimbursement, and impact of clinical processes/procedures for handling, preparation and administration.
  • Product innovations: Current and future designs, engineering controls, packaging, and labeling of products for safer injections (e.g., containers, vials, ampoules, injection devices, delivery systems).
  • Practice innovations: Role of guidelines, standards, education, oversight, outreach, and enforcement related to safe practices.
